“The ministry of listening” by Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Christians have forgotten that the ministry of listening has been committed to them by Him who is Himself the great listener and whose work they should share. We should listen with the ears of God that we may speak the Word of God.

About Good Friday – by M Gerson

Nice piece by Michael Gerson on Christianity

“He [Jesus] was brought down by law and order allied with religion, which is always a deadly mix.”

God is forever on the side of those who suffer. God is forever on the side of life. God is forever on the side of hope.

If the resurrection is real, death’s hold is broken. There is a truth and human existence that cannot be contained in a tomb. It is possible to live lightly, even in the face of death — not by becoming hard and strong, but through a confident perseverance. Because cynicism is the failure of patience. Because Good Friday does not have the final word.

Go Where You Are Needed

From Crawford Loritts https://www.moodyradio.org/programs/living-a-legacy/2017/04-2017/2017.04.09-go-where-you-are-needed-part-2/

April 2017 – Go Where You Are Needed, (2 Parts)

After a while Christians have a tendency to hang around Christians.

7 barriers that make it hard for Christians to go to/reach out to/be with unbelievers

  1. (over time) We Get out of touch with our own neediness.
  2. Fear
  3. Be aware of self-righteousness (becoming a Pharisee – back door Pharisee)
  4. View Christianity as our mission. (Christendom does not equal the Gospel)
  5. We overemphasize the differences that we have.
  6. We are not intentional. (we drift toward a Christian culture)
  7. Diminished relational skills

A Pharisee is one who forgets that he needs to grace of God

Do:

  1. Look for prepared hearts.
  2. Frequent the dark places.
  3. Make loving and engaging the lost a priority.
  4. Don’t forget how to enjoy yourself when hanging out with non-Christians.

Sin

…from 3/22/17 Equipped with Chris Brooks (31 min. mark)

Every human has to deal with

The original sin that destorts us,

The actual Sin that tempts and distracts us, and

The indwelling sin that manipulates us.

Awareness

May we have an awareness, as Jesus showed us, and shows us, of others and respond responsibly. My prayer is that God would give me that awareness and ability to respond in love.

18 Things Mentally Strong People Do

Here’s a good list. I do consider prayer and reverence for God as included and implied.

My comment was:

Yes, I like the way it states they are kind, take calculated risks, willing to fail, etc. However, it does not say they make themselves vulnerable. The term ‘vulnerable’ has become popular recently as a form of hyperbole, but it sends the wrong message. Good list of 18 things. Thanks!

Surviving and Succeeding in Life and Ministry

Surviving and Succeeding in Life and Ministry

Sermon by (Navy Chaplain) Ron Pettigrew, 2/26/17, Wesley UMC

When Ron went off to serve in the Navy, his father told him

Son, take care of your people, because your people will take care of you.

His scripture text for the sermon is Mark 1:29-39

Ron made 3 points in the sermon.

  1. Take care of people. Jesus went (personally) to the mother-in-law.
  2. Take care of yourself.
    1. Note what happens when you are good. (People will give you more and more responsibilities.) We may need to put on the brakes. Pause button.
You may need to take the NAVY approach: Never Again Volunteer Yourself
  3. Re-calibrate – Prioritize and her His voice. Jesus went off and prayed. Jesus didn’t keep just curing illnesses, but went elsewhere to preach which was his purpose.

At some point, we need to Make America United Again

(written Jan. 21, 2017)

It was a very strange election year, for many reasons. (I didn’t feel that either party, during the election, put up a viable candidate.  OK, that can happen from time to time.)

The thing that concerns me is how divisive many have become.

I don’t believe that tearing down and ‘throwing gasoline on the fire’ are ways to make things better.

I think a strength of our country, since it’s inception, has been our ability to work together, to sit down together, and work things out.

A Story

One of the most important things I learned as being a member of Delta Kappa Pi (DKP) at Doane University was the following process our group used:

  1. We would disagree on a topic,
  2. We would discuss and debate the topic,
  3. We would vote on the topic and come to a group decision,
  4. All, on both sides of the issue, would get behind the decision, and make it work.

This process worked well and kept us united. We learned to:

  • Actually sit down and discuss, not argue.
  • Agree to disagree, as needed.
  • Agree, for the purpose of moving forward.
  • Put our differences behind us.
  • The balance of debate and agreement. Yes, debate. Yes, eventually come to consensus.  This balance may be what it all comes down to.

This year, since the election in November, significantly more (what, 3 orders-of-magnitude) people have taken license to protest and therefore be divisive to our government and our country.

This attitude of my party, my group, individualism above all is damaging. I don’t just point the finger at the demonstrators in the streets, but also to our politicians themselves. We all need to learn the process and lessons I learned while in DKP.

I feel we should back the president, whoever they are. I feel we should use the structures and mechanisms that are in place to have peaceful debate and resolution of difference.

We seem to be on a path of anarchy.

I think we need to always look to build community and teamwork.

(I think we need to work from an attitude of love – but that may be another topic.)

Donal Trump  won the election. His slogan was Make America Great Again. (I’m not here to discuss the pros or cons of that slogan or President Trump)

My hope that, in the next election, we can focus on Make America United Again. After all, we are (supposed to be) the United State of America.  I think being united is a precursor/prerequisite to many things when it comes to moving forward in a positive manner.

Thank you to DKP for teaching me an important lesson I have used for my whole life.
